Stop motion
For any moving, blinking, scrolling or auto-updating information (e.g., a ticker) that starts automatically, lasts more than five seconds, and is presented in parallel with other content, there is a mechanism for the user to pause, stop, or hide it.
Exceptions:
- A preloader animation that instructs the user to wait while the video loads, when the animation is the only content on the page.
- A full-page advertisement that requires that all users view a 15 second advertisement before they can access free content available from the site.
Why it matters:
Some people read and process information slowly. The content may disappear before people have time to read it. Moving content can make focusing and reading elsewhere difficult; that is, people cannot focus on some content because the movement in another area of the web page grabs their attention.
WCAG 2.0 reference: 2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide
Example:
https://growwithcars.com/ has many moving and auto-playing content that can mostly be paused or stopped when selecting Show controls from a right click on the content.
How to check for this:
- Check that there is a control on the Web page to stop the motion. Manual
- Activate the control. Manual
- Check that the motion, blinking or auto-updating has stopped. Manual
